American fridge freezer buying guide

American-style fridge freezers give you far more space than a standard fridge freezer, often 500–650 litres. The most important part of choosing one is making sure it fits, and that it can get into the room.
1. Measure the space and the route in
- Most are about 90cm wide, 178cm tall and 65–75cm deep, plus the ventilation gaps the manufacturer specifies.
- Measure every doorway, hallway and turn on the route to the kitchen. The appliance's depth (often without its doors or handles) has to pass through the narrowest door.
- Check there is room for the doors to open fully, particularly if it sits next to a wall, so the drawers can come out.
Our terms explain delivery and access in full; if you are unsure, call us before ordering.
2. Door styles
- Side by side: fridge on one side, freezer on the other. Narrower doors, useful in tighter kitchens.
- French door or multi-door: wide fridge on top, freezer drawers below. Easier to store large platters.
- Three and four door models add flexible drawers that can be switched between fridge and freezer on some models.
3. Water and ice: plumbed or non-plumbed
Plumbed models connect to a cold water supply and make ice and chilled water continuously. They need a water pipe near the fridge, fitted by a plumber. Non-plumbed models have a tank you refill by hand, so they can go anywhere.
4. Energy and noise
Check the A–G energy label and noise level. Large appliances use more energy, so efficiency matters more.
