Built-in oven buying guide

Built-in ovens fit into a kitchen housing unit or under the worktop. Start with the space you have, then choose the features you will use.
1. Single, double or compact
- Single ovens (about 60cm high) fit in a tall housing at eye level or under a worktop. One large cavity, usually with a grill.
- Double ovens give you a main oven and a smaller top oven and grill. Built-in doubles (about 90cm high) go in a tall housing; built-under doubles (about 72cm high) fit under the worktop.
- Compact ovens (about 45cm high) are often combined with a microwave or steam function and sit above a single oven.
2. Cleaning
- Pyrolytic ovens heat to a very high temperature to turn grease to ash, which you wipe away. The easiest to keep clean.
- Catalytic liners absorb grease during normal cooking.
- Enamel interiors are cleaned by hand.
3. Cooking features
- Multifunction ovens offer fan, conventional, grill and combinations.
- Steam or added-steam ovens help bread rise and keep meat moist.
- Slide-and-hide doors (for example on Neff ovens) slide under the oven, making it easier to reach in.
- Meat probes, telescopic runners and app control are useful extras.
4. Electrical supply
Many single ovens can run on a 13A plug, but double ovens and higher-powered models usually need their own cooker circuit, connected by a qualified electrician. Check the installation instructions for the model before ordering.
5. Energy
Ovens carry an energy label (A+++ to D). Fan ovens usually cook at lower temperatures than conventional ovens.
