Range cooker and cooker buying guide

Freestanding cookers combine a hob and ovens in one appliance. Range cookers are the larger version, with several ovens and a wide hob.

1. Width

  • Standard cookers are 50, 55 or 60cm wide and fit between kitchen units.
  • Range cookers are usually 90, 100 or 110cm wide. Measure the gap carefully, including the space the manufacturer asks for at each side.

2. Fuel

  • Dual fuel: gas hob with electric ovens, a popular combination of instant hob control and even oven heat.
  • All gas: gas hob and gas ovens.
  • Electric or induction: no gas supply needed, with induction for the fastest, most efficient hob.

Anything connected to gas must be fitted by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Electric and induction cookers usually need their own cooker circuit, connected by a qualified electrician.

3. Oven layout

Range cookers typically have two main ovens (often one fan oven and one conventional or multifunction), a separate grill and sometimes a slow-cook or storage compartment. Consider which ovens you will use together, for example for a Sunday roast or Christmas.

4. Matching hood

A range cooker needs a hood at least as wide as the hob. Many brands make matching hoods. See our cooker hood guide.
